Weight problems seem to be a problem for nations worldwide. The cost of weight problem is large: the work force loses money in productive cost; the government loses money to treat weight related problems that are preventable. To the person suffering from weight problems, the quality of life is severely affected by the onset of many weight related medical conditions such as diabetes, heart diseases, joint problems and many more.

Being fat does not only affect your health, it affects you self-confidence and you ability to enjoy life to the fullest because of discrimination. The easiest and the surest way to lose weight is often the hardest thing to do for most people. You do not have to spend a fortune on gym memberships or meal replacement aids. The body mass index is just an estimate of your body fat based on your height and weight, it does not take into account many things, but it is an estimate you can use to determine your risk of getting weight related diseases.

It takes about three weeks or twenty-one days to make or break a habit. We do not like feeling hungry; it is hardwired in our brain that hunger is bad. But we often mistaken thirst as hunger, as the body becomes dehydrated, you will sometimes feel hungry instead of thirsty. The first habit to make certain that you constantly keep yourself well hydrated. Keep a bottle of water with you and ensure that you drink about 2 liters of water a day, more if you are sick or doing vigorous exercise.

Diet is a difficult habit to change, but it is possible. The reason why we gain weight or fail to lose weight is because the energy we consume is more than what the body burns off. To begin with, head to the Internet or consult a doctor about how much energy you burn normally. If you like to graze throughout the day, focus on buying low calorie snacks such as watermelon, carrots and celery. Those who have three set meals daily, eating smaller portions but take longer to finish would allow you to feel more satisfied after a meal.

Exercise is a habit that has to be made with determination. Not many people like to sweat it out in the gym, but cardiovascular exercises are proven to help the heart work optimally and burn the excess calories off. Going to the gym is just another method of exercise; you can make your own weights by putting water or sand in water bottles, or buy them cheap secondhand. Swimming is a good way for those who do not like to sweat. You can ask a friend to exercise with you as a partner and motivator.

It is easy and difficult to lose weight, the main problem lies within ourselves and our determination to make our lives better. Diet and exercise are still the two ways guaranteed for a better quality of life. Take charge of your own life today.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is documented in research and elderly people will tell you that breakfast is too important to be wasted on junk foods. If you are trying to lose weight, the first meal of the day determines if you make or break your diet.To break your fast daily, it is best to have something that is nutritious as your body is most receptive to nutrients after resting for hours.

Coffee is a popular choice, but it is not a good choice. Fresh milk and fresh fruit is recommended as better choices for breakfast. In Asia, a meal of rice congee with vegetables is the common way to begin a day. There are many variety of foods that can be eaten to start your day, depending on your level of activity, it is best to start your day healthy. If you are living in a place that offers a large selection of foods, you can change your breakfast menu regularly.

In Japan, breakfast is the main meal of the day with families gathering together to have the most important meal together. A traditional breakfast menu includes rice, soup and side dishes such as omelette, grilled fish and fermented seaweed. Breakfast is usually prepared carefully and enjoyed together as a unit. The larger the selection, the easier it is to look forward to breakfast as a meal.

For children, studies have shown that children who have proper breakfast at home perform better during classes. The brain has the necessary food to function, but over eating for breakfast can have the opposite effect. Most people feel sleepy after a heavy meal as the brain urges the body to rest to digestion can happen smoothly. Recommended children’s breakfast food are milk and fruit.

Unhealthy breakfast options are cakes, cereals with high sugar content and artificial colouring and junk foods. Children who have foods high in sugar tend to be inattentive in class as they are too hyped up to concentrate. Similarly if you are trying to lose weight go for food that have low glycaemic index, or hard to digest such as protein, rather than the usual orange juice and sugar.

Should you exercise before breakfast or after? It is a hard question to answer, while the body needs nutrient to work optimally, eating a big breakfast before a workout is not a comfortable practice. It is advised that the space between a big meal and exercise is three to four hours, having a small breakfast one to two hours before exercising is also recommended. You can use protein shakes to start of your day when you exercise and then supplement with a healthy choice for breakfast after a good workout.

For the most important meal of the day, the choice of food should be important as it affects the progress of the day. People who have healthy breakfast are usually less likely to snack on unhealthy foods before lunch. It is significant when you want to lose weight.

Cholesterol plays an important role in the body, it keeps the cells fluid and is part of hormone production. In the body, cholesterol is lipid into different densities, and low density lipoprotein and very low density lipoprotein are the ‘bad cholesterols’ that lodge in the blood capillaries like arteries and veins, narrowing the passage for the blood to flow through. As the fat accumulates in the blood vessels, the blood vessel will narrow until no blood can pass through. If the narrowing is near the heart, it is a heart attack, in the brain it will be a stroke.

Ever wonder why the French, Greek and the Asians have less cholesterol and heart problems compared to the reset of the world? The answer is fairly simple: lifestyle. Research indicates that diet plays a large role in the health of the heart and the circulation system. All three diets are different to the Western diet high in meat and low in vegetables.

The French loves their butter and rich foods, but they drink moderate amounts of red wine and do plenty of walking. They also enjoy food in terms of quality rather than quantity: avoiding processed food and enjoying smaller portions. In addition, pacing your meal longer and slowly savoring your meal allows better digestion and hence promotes healthier eating. The French drinks red wine as well as plenty of water, keeping hydrated allows the body to function optimally. Most importantly, they do not feel guilty about enjoying good food and wine as they do so moderately.

The Greeks love meat, they also like to use copious amount of olive oil. Olive oil is well known monounsaturated fats that help the body make High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), the level of HDL in the body affects the risk of heart diseases. Extra Virgin olive oils are preferred as they contain more monounsaturated fats than subsequent presses. Like the French, the Greeks favor quality over quantity; a large selection of food such as wheat and seafood in their diet also adds variety and flavor. The Greeks also enjoy their wine in proper amounts.

In Asia, the variety and the portion size affects the health of Asian people. The Chinese prefers natural foods like vegetables and fresh meat. They also drink tea, a drink that has antioxidant values instead of red wine. The Japanese also favor red yeast rice; red yeast rice is the source behind the creation of medication to lower cholesterol: the Statins. Asian cuisines focus on four rules of serving a meal: color, fragrance, taste and appeal. To the Chinese and Japanese, a meal should be enjoyed not only by the taste buds, but by look and smell too.

Compared to three cuisines, the Western diet is in need of a reform to reduce the effects of bad diet. The focus of food should shift from quantity to quality, eating fresh meat and vegetables rather than processed foods. The health of a nation does hinge on the quality of the diet and lifestyle of its people.

No one likes ageing, it is a sign that the body is becoming unable to function optimally. With the lost of collagen, the skin loses elasticity and starts to sag. Years of abuse will start to show: liver spots, pigmentation and injuries are just one of the problems people face aside from wrinkles. As we age, our appetites wean and we are at the risk of malnutrition, accelerating the aging process even faster.

Prevention is better than cure, but aging is a process that can only be slowed down; although we cannot stop the aging process, we can learn to live with it and age gracefully. Keeping an active mind is a good anti-aging tip, which is easier said than done. Research has shown that people who exercises their brain and body cope better in terms of brain function. One research indicates that people who play Mah Jong, a game involving shuffling and arranging of tiles keeps the mind sharp, can prevent dementia.

In Asia, people tend to age slower than Westerners. Tai chi and Mah Jong are one of the daily activities Asian perform to keep their body and mind active. In addition to that, diet of fresh meat and vegetables help supply the body with nutrients that are important in maintaining body functions.Tea is a well known antioxidant, and the Asians consume large amounts of green tea and fresh fruits. The Greek and the French love their red wine, which has the same antioxidant values as tea.

To slow down the aging process, one has to start early. Practice good habits such as applying sunscreen daily before going outdoors, regular moisturizing and proper hydration is important. Smoking and binge drinking is not advisable as it stresses out the body, thus accelerates the aging process. We can enjoy ourselves, but certain things such as alcohol is best down in moderation. Smoking causes free radicals in our body and free radicals hasten the death of cells, causing premature aging.

While we would like to look young forever, Botox and plastic surgery is not the answer. You can look at an old person and think that they look younger than they really are. It is the attitude and the positive outlook they have that affects people’s view. Our body might wither and age, but as long as our minds are sharp we would be able to function as normally as a younger person.

Age is a number and the looks can be deceiving, we can look like sixty but feel like we are thirty and vice versa. We can slap on creams and use potions to make ourselves look younger, but it is how we feel that betrays our emotional age. Having a proper diet full of nutrients and oxidants can help the body function better and prevent aging process from happening too quickly. Not smoking and binge drinking can stop premature aging; however, accepting that aging is part of life is also important to recognize the merits of becoming old.
